BMX and Mountain Bike riders did not allow the high handed approach of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) to daunt their spirits as they turned out to compete in the 17th edition of the Ricks and Sari Agro Industries sponsored cycling meet which took place at the National Park yesterday.
National Cycling Coach Hassan Mohamed MS said he was very disappointed with the fact that the GCF Executive of which he is a part, took the decision not to allow senior and veteran riders to participate citing that if they are not licensed for 2010 they cannot participate, a decision which was embarrassing to the sponsor and discouraging for the riders who have been preparing hard over the past weeks for the start of the new season.
Kaieteur Sport understands that riders are normally given a grace period to register but that was not the case this time around with the hard fisted stance taken by the GCF. Another prominent cycling official disclosed that the period the licence stands for is normally March to March of each year.
A number of senior riders were seen milling around the National Park yesterday and voiced their disapproval at the decision of the GCF Executive towards riders. They stated that the role and aim of the federation is to promote and encourage cycling, not kill it.
On the track however, riders sought to give it their best shot in the 7 races that were ran off instead of the usual 11. Richard Charles took two firsts as did the lone female, Crystal Blackman who competed against male riders.
Charles took the feature mountain bike 10-lap race outsprinting Keon Thomas and Andrea Petty in that order to the line. He was also successful in the first event of the day for upright cyclists, Thomas settling for the runner-up spot with Ozia McCually 3rd.
Blackman picked up where she left off from 2009, first taking the BMX 6-9 race ahead of Romel Boodhoo and Nicholas Nandan and returned to beat the field in the 9-12 age group; Christopher Griffith and Samuel Boodhoo settling for 2nd and 3rd.
Dominating the BMX open was Marlon King who was trailed to the line by Ozia McCually and Andrea Petty. The BMX 12-14 contest saw Darius Ramsammy taking the number one spot beating in the process, Nicholas Alves and Grantley Bentick.
Paul De Nobrega topped the field in the 12-14 year’s boys contest leaving Devanand Bissoon in his wake with Brandon Baker 3rd.
The top three finishers received trophies compliments of the sponsors while the respective winners collected hampers made up of Ricks and Sari products.
Distributing trophies and hampers on behalf of Ricks & Sari Agro Industries Ltd. at the presentation was Finance Director Shahzar Ali who said the company was very pleased to continue a tradition that has been going on for the past 17 years and it was their way of continuing the legacy of the late Regan Rodrigues, a former President of the Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club and also a former Motor Racing Champion of Guyana.
