-100 reports still outstanding
The Police Complaints Authority is currently trying to close off investigations into the numerous reports it received in 2009. There are still some 100 reports outstanding.
For last year alone, the PCA was overwhelmed with 364 complaints of which 222 were oral.
To date, all of the oral complaints have been dealt with through the level of the respective Commanders of the Divisions. Of the oral complaints, 122 were issues of neglect of duty, 46 cases of unlawful arrest, eight cases of wanting in civility to a member of the public, 31 cases of unnecessary violence, five cases of illegal search, four cases of acting in a manner likely to bring discredit to a member of the Guyana Police Force and six cases of corrupt transacting.
The PCA has a total of 76 cases of neglect of duty, 32 cases of unlawful arrest, 15 cases of using unnecessary violence, nine cases of acting in a manner likely to bring discredit on the reputation of the Guyana Police Force, two cases of wanting in civility to a member of the public, two cases of illegal search, three cases of corrupt transaction and three cases of unlawful killing.
Of the 142 written complaints, the Police Complaints Authority only managed to complete 42, most likely reports made by the Commissioner of Police Henry Greene.
In the meantime, the PCA Chairman has pledged his commitment toward closing the remaining investigations into the outstanding reports.
