– party to boycott
By Gary Eleazar
The week of activities of the Men Empowerment Network (MEN) should begin with the entity insisting that appropriate examples are set by the Office of the President.
This will be the plea of the Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) which says that in welcoming Dr. Myles Munroe to Guyana, the party will be urging him to hold a seminar at the Office of the President with the Head of State in attendance.
The PNCR is of the opinion that, “Jagdeo should be advised how a man should treat his spouse and how the President should deal with acts of immorality by members of his staff…This will provide better examples that Guyanese youth could emulate.”
Views emanating from the PNCR are that the desire by the Government to sponsor such an activity is “another attempt to divert the attention of the people of Guyana from the gross atrocities being committed by the regime against men in Guyana”.
“President Jagdeo has refused to address the issue of the hundreds of Guyanese men who were executed by the phantom squad, under the direction of Government functionaries, in collaboration with criminal enterprises…The demand for an international inquiry has so far fallen on deaf ears, and many Guyanese mothers have been unable to bring closure to these sad episodes in their lives.”
The party members are questioning how the activities of MEN’s week will contribute to that, “but the PNCR will not be diverted from its quest to have a proper investigation into this disgraceful period of Guyana’s history.”
As such, this newspaper has been reliably informed that the party will lend no credence to what it calls political propaganda and will not participate in the political exercise.
The PNCR is of the opinion that there is no doubt that there are many issues facing Guyana, “that proper orientation of our men will help to address…If, however, the Jagdeo PPP Administration was serious about addressing these problems then more enlightened and consultative approaches would have been followed.”
The party stated that it was not consulted on the aims and objectives of the programme and as such will not be, “a passive bystander to give any legitimacy to the machinations of the political agenda of the PPP.”
Recently, Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud, performing the duties of Prime Minister, called on
men of all ethnicity, religions and ages to participate in the events organized for National Men’s Week by the Men Empowerment Network and the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
“This initiative recognizes the importance of men in contributing to the well being of families, communities and the nation at large…MEN’s positive role in the family can contribute to the successful future of the children and the well being of the family and our country…We must see this as a great opportunity to meet and interact with such an influential public figure, Dr Myles Munroe, Leadership coach and Spiritual leader, that will help us to overcome our challenges in taking a strong leadership role in the development of our nation.”
