Guyana faltered to deceive after playing unbeaten in the preliminary stages of an International Triangular Series involving Suriname and the Washington based semi-professional club DC Jammers in July of 1993.
Guyana playing under the stewardship of Colts United shooting Guard Eion ‘Wico’ Leitch ran out of gas in the finals against a rejuvenated Jammers lineup. Willie Hodges lit up the Sports Hall with 36 points.
In the series opener Guyana pipped the Washington DC Jammers 81 to 79 points. Skipper Eion Leitch led from the front with 19 points, centre Edgar Thomas had 14 points while Lugard Mohan and Leon Christian supported with 12 points each.
For DC Jammers, captain Steven Nurse top scored with 17 points, Andre Lee 14 points, Reggie King 12 points and Willie Hodges 10 points lent support.
In the second game of the series DC Jammers rebound from the opening loss with a commanding 86 points to 72 points victory over Suriname. Skipper Nurse led all scorers with 25 points, Andre Lee 14 points while Heinrod David and Willie Hodges contributed 12 points each. For Suriname, Reggie Metendaf had 12 points and Ludwig Belgrave 13 points.
Guyana then trounced Suriname 85 points to 73 Leon Christian 18 points, Lugard Mohan 12 points, Edgar Thomas 11 points and Dane Kendall 10 points, for Suriname Lucien Baldwyn, Lenny Hyhove and Steve Shoeters scored 12 points each while Lugwig belgrave had 11 points.
Guyana started the second round with a twelve points victory over DC Jammers 82 to 70 at MSC, Linden. Lugard Mohan had 15 points while for DC Jammers skipper Steven Nurse scored 22 points Willie Hodges 15 points and Andre Lee 14 points.
Suriname then outplayed DC Jammers 84 to 77 points. For Suriname, Lugwig Belgrave scored 17 points, Kenneth Narton 16 points, Lenny Hyhove 12 points, while for DC Jammers Pierre Goddette top scored with 24 points, Heinrod David supported with 17 points.
Guyana then blew out Suriname 87 to 51 to secure a place in the finals. Rawlwin Loncke and Lugard Mohan top scored with 14 points; for Suriname Ludwig Belgrave had 14 points and Lenny Hyhove 12 points.
Finals – Guyana vs. DC Jammers; Guyana playing in its first International Triangular Series Finals since 1970, had no answer for Willie Hodges whose 36 points led the Washington based Club to a commanding 112 to 97 points.
He received admirable support from skipper Steven Nurse 17 points, Andre Lee 14 points and former Guyana International Heinrod David 11 points. David’s Hi Flyers teammate Leon Christian top scored for Guyana in a losing cause with 19 points, Dane Kendall 14 points, Rawlwin Loncke 14 points and Robert Cadogan 10 points.
