20 Under-13 & 15 players benefit
The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) with sponsorship from the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club on Thursday last held its Third Annual Educational Awards Ceremony at the Board’s Office, Cheddi Jagan Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
A total of 20 Under-13 and 15 cricketers drawn from clubs across the Ancient County were presented with educational and hygiene kits with a collective value of $200,000 from the BCB as part of the Board’s effort to have them remain in school to obtain a solid educational foundation.
Public Relations Officer and Chairman of the BCB Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster, whose committee organised the event in opening remarks at the function, said that the BCB wishes for every cricketer in Berbice to understand the importance of education as it would assist them to become better sportsmen and role models to their peers and teammates.
Foster challenged the young players to develop a love for reading and researching and to explore all avenues of learning. He however cautioned them to also develop a culture of respect and discipline as it makes no sense to have education and still be indisciplined and rude.
Board President Keith Foster advised the young cricketers to stay away from illegal drugs and to always strive for excellence, as the sky is the limit.
The President also committed his Board towards more investment into education as he strongly believes that it would assist to raise the standard of players representing the county.
Regional Six Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha in addressing the packed audience hailed the Berbice Boards’ continued emphasis on the importance of education. He noted that over the past two years he has been following the rapid progress of cricket in Berbice with great interest.
Mustapha urged the Board to keep up the good work and called on the young players to take full advantage of the opportunities presented to them as they seek to become the next Narsingh Deonarine, Royston Crandon or Assad Fudadin.
Region Six Community Relations Officer Faizal Jafferally also offered remarks on the importance of having an educated mind if one wanted to be successful in sports.
Under-15 players Lenny Sanichar spoke on behalf of the awardees and expressed gratitude to the Berbice Cricket Board for investing in their future and also for being a caring Board. He pledged that all the awardees would stay in school and would work harder to achieve more success in terms of their grades.
The awardees are Sanichar and Jamal Jarvis of Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, Sachin Dhaniram of Albion, Dillon Joseph of West Berbice, Vidual La Fleur of Tucber Park, Shimroy McKenzie of Police, Linden Austin of Young Warriors, Suresh Dhaniram of Rose Hall Canje, T. Ramdeen of Edinburgh, Kenroy James of Mental Hospital, Bhojnarine Persaud of Port Mourant, Vijay Mohan of Chesney, Joel Benn of Kildonan, Randy Drepaul of Whim, Nicholai Ceres of Scottsburg and Devendra Naggah of Mount Sinai.
