Haiti needs our help, all of our help. There is untold suffering in that country. The situation has long passed desperate. This is why we must act and act now. We must join with the international community to do all that we can and do so quickly to bring an end to the untold suffering of the people of that country.
We support the efforts of all those organisations that have been raising support for the people of Haiti. Kaieteur News has been flooded with appeals from citizens to do something. Calls have been made for us to launch a public fund, as we have done so successfully in the past.
We feel moved by the numerous appeals and also feel that it is our obligation to join in the relief effort. Kaieteur News has started a fund to help the victims of the earthquake.
Our publisher was on train headed for North India when he got the call about the devastation in Haiti and about the fund which was being started by the newspaper. He immediately pledged the sum of $200,000. However, as the full gravity of the crisis came to light, he has increased this newspaper’s contribution to $1 million.
He is calling on all Guyanese to contribute to the fund started by the Kaieteur News. He is appealing to all Guyana to make a contribution, however small, to help the people of Haiti.
This is a time for our people to stand together with the people of Haiti. This is the time for all of us to make the sacrifices necessary to help the tens of thousands of citizens of that country who know not what their future holds. This is a time to help.
Persons wishing to make a contribution to the fund started by the Kaieteur News should either call or come down to our newspaper’s office. We will accept any and all financial contributions, but we require a name for every contribution. In ensuring full accountability and transparency, we shall publish the names and the value of their contributions.
Please help the people of Haiti at this time!
