Yesterday, several persons of the North Ruimveldt Squatting area were being questioned by the police into the circumstances surrounding the fire that destroyed four buildings, Friday night.
Two other buildings were destroyed after persons were forced to destroy them into a nearby canal in order to prevent the fire from spreading.
Yesterday when this newspaper revisited the fire scene, persons were seen rummaging through the rubble to see if anything valuable was left behind. One man, whose house was saved was seen reinforcing some loose boards on his house which was damaged after persons pushed down a nearby building to avoid the fire from spreading.
Meanwhile, the ten persons who are now left homeless after the fire are now contemplating their next move. One of the houses was occupied by four persons, another by five and the third by a security guard.
What is more worrying for the families who lost not only their homes but all of their earthly possessions is the fact that they have up to February 9 to vacate the area in keeping with an order by the Mayor and City Council.
The families are concerned over the fact that they have nothing to move with.
Meanwhile, persons in the area are blaming the fire on parents not properly supervising their children.
This newspaper was told that someone sent a child into one of the houses, unsupervised with a lighter to light a candle. Moments later the fire was seen coming from the said house.
