The ongoing drive by the Ministry of Housing and Water to provide house lots to Guyanese will soon be given a major boost as its negotiation with the Guyana Sugar Corporation to acquire lands is closer to being inked.
This was disclosed by a well placed official in the Housing Ministry who said that very soon the lots will be available from additional lands that will be purchased from GuySuCo.
The cash-strapped company’s CEO, Errol Hanoman, recently stressed the importance of selling the Diamond lands which he said should rake in more than $30B—money that is of utmost importance to the company’s turnaround plan.
Only recently, Housing Minister Irfaan Ali, during the Cabinet Outreach in Berbice, announced that Government will be spending more than $780M in Region Six for the provision of additional housing.
Fort Ordnance will be extended by a further 460 house lots. The sum of $234M will be spent to develop infrastructure in the new areas to benefit approximately 2000 people, Minister Ali said.
The tender process for the project, he said has been completed and is awaiting the approval of the Inter American Development Bank (IDB).
“We are hoping to have this contract awarded by mid-February so that we can commence works in this area…This is part of government’s overall plan for the region”.
