Beat Tucber Park on first innings; Loyden Lewis cracks 62*, Perreira snares 7 wkts
Rose Hall Town Farfan and Mendes (RHTF&M) are the Tenelec Inc. Berbice Under-15 cricket champions. They lifted the championship trophy after claiming first innings points over Tucber Park in the final which was contested at the Area ‘H’ ground on Sunday.
A magnificent all round performance by Berbice Under-15 allrounder Shawn Perreira led his team to victory; grabbing 7 wickets and also contributing 20 when his team took first strike.
RHTF&M lost opener Collis Cort for a duck in the 4th over (5-1) before pacer Orlando Tanner accounted for No. 3 batsman Jamal Brusche smartly caught by Niall Smith at point for 7 to leave the home team in trouble at 13-2.
Inform opener Nicholas Cameron and the talented Perreira then added 41 for the 3rd wicket before Perreira was bowled off an inside edge for 20 by off spinner Andel De Jonge. Cameron 22 and Jamal Jarvis 3 both followed in quick succession as Tucber Park fought back to reduce the home team to 65-5 in the 26th over.
Skipper Loyden Lewis, in his final game at this level and Lenny Sinclair then sought to rebuild with a 30 run 6th wicket partnership before De Jonge had Sinclair caught behind by Romario De Jonge for 12 on the stroke of lunch with the score at 95-6.
After the interval Neil Pike joined his captain at the crease and completely dominated the Tucber Park bowling attack with a quick fire 46 (8 fours), the pair adding a crucial 80 for the 7th wicket.
Pike eventually fell with the score at 175-7 in the 53rd over, caught off leg spinner Kevin Pellew attempting to hit a six. Twelve year-old Daniel Lewis then joined his brother Loyden and they added 26 to guide RHTF&M to 201-7 when their allotted 60 first innings overs expired. Loyden was undefeated on 62 (5 x 4, 1 x 6) while Daniel was unbeaten on 3.
Andel De Jonge took 4-36, with one wicket each for Judason Bess, Kevin Pellew and Orlando Tanner for Tucber Park who needed 202 off 60 overs to take first innings points but were bowled out for 141 in 56.1 overs despite an attractive 56 from Andel DeJonge who capped a fine all round performance in a losing cause.
The first wicket pair (Jermaine Henry and skipper Devindra Jainabi) added 20 before leg spinner Shawn Perreira had Jainabi caught by Neil Pike at midwicket for 10. Romario De Jonge joined the aggressive Henry and together they attempted to take the attack to the RHT Farfan & Mendes spin duo of Perreira and Lloydel Lewis.
They added 25 in 4 overs before Henry was brilliantly caught one handed by Pike off Perreira for 20. From a position of 45-2 in 13 overs, Tucber Park collapsed to 68-7 as the spinners spun webs around batsmen who were afraid to use their feet.
De Jonge 10, Randolph Davis 4, Totaram Deonarine 5, Niall Smith 16 and Orlando Tanner 1 were the batsmen dismissed in that period.
The innings was eventually wrapped up at 141 in 56.1 overs with the aggressive Andel De Jonge who was the last wicket to fall completing a good match with an attractive 56. He was stumped by wicketkeeper Collis Cort off Perreira who ended with 7-40 off 24 probing overs. Off spinner Lewis took 2-40 off 19 overs while pacer Jamal Jarvis took the other wicket for 20.
Public Relations Officer of the Berbice Cricket Board Hilbert Foster at the presentation ceremony praised both teams for playing a highly competitive yet friendly encounter while challenging the players to remain focused and disciplined.
On behalf of the Berbice Cricket Board, he expressed gratitude to Bobby Deonarine and Tom Gruentzel and the Management of the Tenelec Inc. based in Washington DC for their continued investment in cricket in the Ancient County.
