A Jamaican national who was caught at the Cheddi Jagan Airport with a quantity of cocaine was yesterday remanded by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Jason Gravely, 24, appeared to answer a charge of possession of narcotic for the purpose of trafficking.
It is alleged that on January 11 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Timehri Gravely trafficked in five kilograms of cocaine by attempting to export same.
Gravely, who was represented by attorney at law Ronald Burch-Smith pleaded not guilty to the charge. Burch-Smith in an application for bail for his client stated that the suitcase that contained the cocaine was bought by the driver who took his client to the airport. He added that the substance may have been planted there without his client’s knowledge.
He said that the cocaine had been expertly concealed.
However, police prosecutor Shellon Daniels objected to bail and stated that the cocaine was found in a pocket of the suitcase and not expertly concealed.
The magistrate then remanded the accused and transferred the matter to the Providence Magistrate’s Court where the accused is expected to appear on Friday.
