Guyanese footballers continue to be exposed to high level Leagues in the Caribbean and more frequently now, the United States of America Division 1 and 2 Leagues. These opportunities are being made through the committed and dedicated work of Guyana Football Federation USA representative Garth Nelson.
Nelson, who has been responsible for procuring the MLS deal for Gregory Richardson who was Guyana’s first player to play at this level, has now made it possible for many others to try out in the USA.
Leaving Guyana later this month for pre-season training with the Carolina Railhawks are Trinidad and Tobago based defenders Walter Moore and Kester Jacobs, who both enjoyed a good season with Caledonia AIA, coached by former GFF Technical Director, Jamaal Shabazz.
Joining the duo will be another Caledonia AIA player, Brion Baker who along with Moore and Jacobs helped Caledonia to the 3rd place in the 2009 T&T Pro League.
At the Railhawks, Moore, Jacobs and Baker will link up with Gregory Richardson who made an exciting start at the club last season.
According to Nelson, Richardson has made an everlasting impression on the team and the Railhawks fans and he is well loved there.
Kaieteur Sport understands that the Railhawks will be playing a newly formed League called the North American Soccer League (NASL) which no doubt will and has created openings for other players.
Forward Randolph Jerome, who also played a great part in Caledonia’s placing 3rd out of 11 teams last season, is scheduled to return to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds along with fellow Guyanese Kevin Beaton.
Another defender, Sean Cameron has been training with the New York Red Bulls for the past three months, Nelson disclosed.
“I am also working closely with Guyana Football Federation and its President Colin Klass to help secure contracts for a number of players from the Super League and the Trinidad and Tobago Pro league.
So far up to four players we are seriously considering but none of them have been contacted yet.”
Klass has extended his congratulations to all the players and has encouraged them to make their chances count by becoming permanent members of the respective teams.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
