Dhanraj Singh, 22, of West Canefield, East Canje, Berbice, was yesterday remanded to prison by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when he appeared before her on a charge of rape.
Singh, a welder at the Rose Hall Estate and father of one, is accused of forcefully having sexual intercourse with a female neighbour on December 17 last.
Kaieteur News understands that the two were attending a wake when Singh is alleged to have committed the act. The Prosecutor, Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, objected to bail being granted on the grounds of the nature and gravity of the offence, he also objected on the grounds that if granted bail, the accused may not return for his trial. The prosecutor further stated that information had been received that approaches were made to a witness and as such bail should not be granted.
Attorney at law Charrandass Persaud appearing for the accused argued for bail to be granted to his client. The attorney said that Singh was first sent on bail in December and if he wanted he would have already fled the jurisdiction.
The attorney said that the accused has a fixed place of abode, is married and has a job, and there is no reason for him not to return for his trial.
The magistrate after listening to the arguments refused bail and ordered that the accused return to court on Friday.
