Scores turned out yesterday to get a final glimpse of former football player turned businessman, Vibert Weekes.
Weekes was shot repeatedly on Robb Street, Lacytown, last Saturday night by a lone gunman dressed in female attire.
Weekes was buried according to Muslim rites.
‘Disneyland’ and ‘Jurassic Park’ were some of the terms used to describe the setting at the man’s WW8 North East La Penitence home, as national football players, business persons and scores of popular male and female personalities congregated.
As the man’s body arrived at his residence, the large crowd converged in the yard to view the man’s body.
Screams emanated from the yard as Weekes’s body was carried in the yard in a modest coffin lined with white fabric and his body wrapped in matching fabric. Family members had to be restrained as the man’s body was unwrapped to loud screaming and wailing.
Relatives had the unenviable task of ensuring order when the time for viewing came. In their haste to view the body, the overly curious crowd rushed to the area where the body was placed making it impossible for order to prevail.
It was at this time that family members covered the body until there was an orderly line to file pass the coffin.
The comments from those that gathered were mixed; some suggested that many who came did not know Weekes; while others suggested that many among the crowd did not like him.
Weekes was later buried in the Le Repentir Cemetery.
