The United Force party currently headed by Labour Minister, Manzoor Nadir, will be contesting the 2011 General Elections.
This was confirmed by Nadir yesterday who told this newspaper that traditionally, “the TUF has a glorious history of contesting the elections.”
When asked if he would be the candidate in pursuit of the Presidency, Nadir pointed out that like all of the other political parties there is a democratic process that has to be observed first.
According to Nadir, the decision as to who will be the Presidential Candidate will be taken at the party’s Delegates’ Conference which will be held sometime before October this year.
In August 2005 at the Party’s Conference, Nadir, who was also Minister of Tourism Industry and Commerce in the Peoples Progressive Party Civic Government was returned leader of the TUF unopposed.
The Deputy Leader is Michael Anthony Abraham, while the party Chairman was Ismail Muhammed and Vice Chairman Mr. Errol Van Nooten.
On July 26, 2006, for General Elections that year, Nadir, when presenting the list of candidates to Chief Elections Officer, Gocool Bodhoo, said that his party is very confident of doing well at the upcoming elections. “We are here to present the list of candidates for the party that has been right and ready.”
When questioned as to his motives, Nadir had said, “Why I am contesting the elections? That’s because TUF believes that we have the best possible candidates needed if Guyana is going to achieve greatness. We have some of the best candidates around as well as over 350 candidates with some two thousand odd petitioners,” he said.
Nadir had expressed confidence that with the reception they have been receiving over the years, TUF will certainly be the third force thus being able to control balance of power.
“We have a balanced list with persons of varying professions while the races have all been represented and we have ensured that there is gender balance on the list as we have always preached for gender balance,” he continued.
Following the elections in 2006, the TUF secured 0.8 per cent of the votes in the General Elections and Nadir again teamed up with the ruling administration and was appointed Labour Minister.
Nadir is touted to be returned again as the party leader and will more than likely be the Presidential Candidate for the TUF in the 2011 General Elections.
Born November14, 1955, the Current Labour Minister holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and a Masters Degree in Economics.
Leader since April 1991, he was a President of the youth arm and a former member of the UG Council.
He was elected to Parliament in 1992 and has 26 years of service under his belt as a member of the United Force.
