Renowned animal thief, Gordian Rawlins, 24, of Fort Ordnance Housing Scheme; East Canje, on Friday found that his luck ran out as he was sentenced to six months in prison at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court when he appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo.
It is alleged that on January 1st, Rawlins stole one sheep valued $20,000 property of Abu Baker Razack of Cumberland.
Recalling the incident, Police prosecutor Satrohan Dayaram said that on the day in question Razack had secured his animals and upon checking later, found that one was missing. He said that a report was made to the police and acting upon information the accused was caught with the sheep in his possession.
Rawlins who was previously fined for two matters of similar nature pleaded guilty and begged the Magistrate for leniency. He claimed that he was sorry.
Dayaram then told the court that Rawlins is a person who seems to take pleasure in stealing other people’s animals and should be given a custodial sentence.
He added that just recently, Rawlins was before the court on two similar matters and was fined for both offenses.
Rawlins was fined for stealing three pigs to the value of $30,000 the property of Taijpaul Singh on September 22nd at No 2 Village. While on September 25 he made off with a dog worth $50,000 belonging to his neighbour Ravindra Ramnauth.
