The members of the Kuru Kururu Assembly of God Church are praying for the speedy recovery of their pastor and another church member who were shot by gunmen fleeing from the scene of a robbery at around 21: 30 hrs on Saturday.
Reports are that 55 year-old Pastor Haydock Bagot of 183 Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke/ Linden, and church member Phillip Toney were shot by bandits who had robbed and beaten a female resident.
Bagot was shot in the stomach and left hand while Toney, a mechanic, was wounded in the left leg.
Both men are said to be in stable conditions at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
A police press release stated that around 21:30 hours on Saturday, Vashtie Heber, 27, of Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, was on the back stairway of her home when she was confronted by three men, two of whom carried firearms.
According to the police, the bandits took Heber into her home where they took away $15,000.00 cash, but demanded more valuables.
She was subsequently assaulted about her body with a firearm during which she managed to run out of the building and escape.
Barbara Bagot, the pastor’s wife, said her husband and Toney were wounded as the gunmen were fleeing the area.
The woman said she was upstairs when she heard what sounded like gunshots and it was not until someone called out for her telling her that he husband was shot she realised what was going on.
Mrs. Bagot said her husband was in the kitchen downstairs while the other wounded man was doing some mechanic work in the yard. Kaieteur News was told that Toney was working on a minibus that the pastor owns.
“I hear somebody calling for me and when I ran downstairs and I saw my husband lying on the floor with two gunshot wounds, one to his left hand and another to his abdomen,” Mrs. Bagot recalled. She subsequently learnt that Toney was shot in his left foot. The two wounded men were rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre but were then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to Mrs. Bagot, from what she was told three gunmen went into their neighbour’s house and tied up two females there.
She said she was told that the men threatened to kill the women and left and it was during the escape they began firing shots in the area.
Meanwhile, Bagot’s condition is listed as critical but stable following emergency surgery.
He is being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s High Dependency Unit, while Toney has been admitted to the Male Surgical ward.
Yesterday, both men were surrounded by church members who were present to offer words of prayer.
