– GGMC asked to investigate
The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) is being asked to investigate corruption of its staff members, police and army in mining areas around the Venezuelan border.
A miner complained that unless the situation is controlled, no amount of regulations will help to root out the anomalies in the industry.
The miner, Wilmot Chan, who operates at Eterinbang, in the Upper Cuyuni area, made the complaint Friday during a special meeting called by the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) to discuss the industry in light of new proposals being studied.
Police, army personnel and GGMC staffers are said to be openly demanding kickbacks for turning a blind eye to infringements, the miner told GGMC’s Commissioner, William Woolford.
The miner said that while the regulations are there governing the operations of camps, the reality is that the situation has developed into a situation of the USA’s old west where everybody is carrying a gun on the hips.
According to the miner, the situation near the Venezuelan border can be described as an invasion. Not only are the Brazilians bypassing the established procedures to acquire mining lands, they are also in many cases employing fewer or no Guyanese.
The situation is a serious one with more and more small miners being displaced.
The complaints of Chan came Friday as miners, feeling threatened from a proposal that will mandate them to give a six-months notice to authorities before they start operations, held a special meeting at the GGDMA office on North Road.
