Police on the Essequibo Coast are currently investigating what they suspect may be the first murder on the Coast for the year.
Reports of the area are that 38-year-old Shanta Sancharie, of Anna Regina Housing Scheme died on January 4 while being treated at the Suddie Hospital.
This newspaper was told that the woman, who is a known alcoholic, checked herself in at the hospital on December 29 last after complaining of severe pains about her body.
There are reports that several tests which were carried out by a doctor revealed that the woman had an alcohol liver disease and that she was being treated for same.
However following the woman’s death concerns were raised by relatives that the woman’s body bore several marks of violence. This information was passed to the police. This was further confirmed by the doctor who was treating Sancharie.
As such, the police have since ordered a hold on efforts to have the woman buried without a post mortem being conducted.
A post mortem is expected to be done on the woman’s remains on Friday.
