As relatives of the late Hemchand Gopaul continue to mourn his death, they are yet to receive answers from the Guyana Police Force to questions about his death.
Only last week, Mohamed Jameer, Head of the Office of Professional Responsibility said that the investigation into the shooting is expected to be completed sometime later this month.
Jameer had also told this newspaper that the ranks involved in the shooting are all still on active duty. He however could not comment on the status of the investigation.
Hemchand Gopaul, 18, of Rose Hall, Corentyne Berbice died after sustaining a gunshot wound to the neck. Police said he was one of three men who robbed a family at Hampshire Village, Corentyne—a charge that his family denied. Another man was arrested, but has since been released on bail.
Police had stated that the robbery occurred about 1.30am on the 18th December at Hampshire Village, Corentyne, where Maria Mootoo, 45, her sister Savitri Mootoo, 41, their mother Latchmini Narinesammy, 68, and a brother were at home.
Three men, armed with a firearm and a cutlass, broke a window and entered the home.
They held the two sisters at gunpoint and took away a quantity of jewelry and $85,000. The trio discharged a round as they escaped, police said.
Acting on information received, police were able to pursue the robbers and came “under fire at the Rose Hall Cemetery. Police pursued the men and allegedly came under gunfire at Port Mourant.
A police bulletin stated that the ranks returned fire, fatally wounding Gopaul.
It added that one of Gopaul’s accomplices was subsequently arrested in the Port Mourant district.
However, the family is refuting all reports by the police. According to family members, Gopaul was just an innocent teen who was mistakenly shot by trigger happy ranks.
Family members claimed that the teen along with two others were picking up scrap iron in the back dam.
