– investments made, now time to deliver the goods – Dr Luncheon
Government says that it is toying with the idea of bringing Cabinet Ministers to its weekly post-Cabinet press briefings to face the media.
The disclosure was made last week by Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon, during his year-end press conference.
This year also, the administration says that it will be demanding that its various Ministries deliver better services as significant investments have been made overtime to build infrastructure and critical areas. According to Dr Luncheon, the move to bring Ministers more to the frontline has to do with the fact that there were instances in the past where media reports on conversations with Ministers were not accurate. Dr Luncheon said that the Guyana Chronicle came in for the most criticisms in this regard.
Currently, while some Ministers would hold press conferences and attend other forums, the media would have to depend on these occasions to ask questions on other issues. Some of the Ministers are more accessible than others, the Cabinet Secretary said.
The Cabinet Secretary said that his reports of Cabinet’s deliberations which are presented as snippets are read out to media invited to the press briefings. These are sometimes misreported, he said.
To explain better on current issues on matters relating to a particular ministry, the administration is looking to bring a Minister to the weekly Cabinet briefings.
Of course, Dr Luncheon acknowledged, with the Freedom of Information Act soon to become law, media workers attending the briefings may be armed with questions that may put the Minister on the spot or as he put it, be “dog season”.
Media houses may also have an opportunity to request a particular Minister depending on the issue in the air at the time, he said.
Meanwhile, the official said that government intends to ensure that investments in the various sectors start paying dividends to stakeholders. Already the Ministers have been mandated to improve sectoral performances and intensify the delivery of goods and services and better governance.
According to Dr Luncheon, Guyana is fast approaching sustainable levels of investments in some sectors, and the concentration in 2010 will now be in getting value for money.
There can be no reason for non-performance as the necessary tools and facilities are being provided.
