Several temporary workers of the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC), who overtime were kept on, have been sent home effective yesterday.
This was confirmed by Chairman of GPOC, Bishop Juan Edghill, who said that casual workers were costing the Corporation several millions of dollars over its salary budget.
It was unclear exactly how many of these workers were hired by the 65 post offices countrywide but according to the Chairman, it was a problem with which GPOC has been grappling over the past year.
Postmasters are allowed to hire temporary workers whenever an employee gets sick or is pregnant, Bishop Edghill explained.
Yesterday, a caller to Kaieteur News said that as many as 300 persons may have been affected but the Chairman was unsure how many of these workers are in the system.
The GPOC Board of Directors made the decision early this week.
According to Bishop Edghill, temporary staff are hired for 28 days. In December, no permanent staffers are allowed leave because of the workload.
“We are not sure of the number of people. These temporary workers are hired without going through the normal recruitment system of the Corporation. If there are vacancies, then we will rehire, through the normal procedures.”
