Compliments of Gold Target Export & Mark Interior Communication
BK International Western Tigers Football Club was made 3 million dollars richer by local companies Gold Target Export, Victoria’s Fashion and Mark Interior Communication.
The cash was presented to the club for their semi-final win in the 20th Kashif and Shanghai Football Tournament over defending champions Pele on December 28 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
In handing over the cheque at Victoria’s Fashion yesterday, the donors said they were very delighted to be making such a contribution to Western Tigers, a club they have admired for their discipline and committed work ethics during and before the tournament. The Tigers roared to victory via penalty kicks against the star studded Pele to book a place in this evening’s championship game and are aiming to be champions this time around having lost the 2002/2003 title to Fruta Conquerors.
Collecting the cheque on behalf of the club was Captain Dillon Fraser whose tower like performance in the semi-final, helped to shape victory for his team.
Club President Gordon Gilhuys expressed great delight on his club’s fortunes, the biggest single pay out to any local club.
“I am thankful to the organizations that have contributed to our victory and I am looking forward to more corporate sponsorship in the future.”
Gilhuys is of the opinion that the massive contribution augurs well for the future of the game in Guyana. “We really need this kind of impetus for the game to develop to the next level.”
Gilhuys noted that while business entities are getting involved with this level of commitment, he is concerned that club leaders are calling for them not to.
“We need corporate sponsorship and when you have Presidents from clubs making statements that corporate entities must not openly say they are supporting a club, it would not do well for football. Football for years has been stifled because of the fact that new sponsors are not coming forward to anything – now persons are coming forward to give support to clubs and you are not supporting this. People must be allowed to support whichever club they want to.”
Gilhuys stated that the announcement of the intended give out on the night perhaps was not done in a well thought-out way and expressed the confidence that the tournament organizers, Kashif and Shanghai will do so in a structured manner for the final tonight.
“We however, cannot stop an entity or entities from supporting teams, that’s the only way football can develop in Guyana.”
Western Tigers in the New Year will embark on a massive youth drive and part of the funds presented to them yesterday will go towards fulfilling this desire.
The club’s intention is to have Under-11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 teams which will serve as feeders to the senior team ultimately.
“Next year the emphasis will be on youth because most of our players are approaching the age of 30 and we need to garner the youths to take over in a structured manner”, the club boss noted.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
