Today marks the end of another year in which Guyana made marginal progress in the sporting arena.
Once again, only a few organisations managed to record results at the regional and international levels which could be deemed encouraging and this is despite the difficulties encountered in the areas of funding and technical expertise.
The year was highlighted once again with officialdom continuing to offer lip service instead of offering real support for the development of sports or more directly their individual organisations.
This observation is based on the fact that too many organisations failed to improve or even match the previous year’s performance and might have even regressed since that period.
Some of those that readily come to mind are disciplines such as Darts, Volleyball, Netball, Basketball and Lawn Tennis and Boxing.
Some of these disciplines got off to promising starts, but eventually fizzled into obscurity often times due to the lethargy of its respective administrations and this pattern of behaviour is quite consistent with nearly all of them.
Then there are those who have had success at the regional and international levels, but whose administrations seemed to lag behind, while there are some who though not in the mainstream have survived and made progress due to the vibrancy of its executive.
Then there is the Ministry of Sport whose role is critical in the whole process of development.
Fizzled out-
Netball had a good start, running a few competitions, before it disappeared altogether from the local radar.
Boxing promised much, but because of administrative quarrels was restricted to a few hastily organised Inter-Gym box-offs, while it could be said that Volleyball was a non-starter just as Darts which had a couple of skirmishes (competitions) here and there, but for the better part was absent in the majority.
Lawn tennis had to wait until the end of the year to come out of its comatose with back-to-back tournaments, while much more should have been done for basketball.
Cricket despite its busy schedule looked in disarray with officials constantly engaged in a struggle for power among the various stakeholders and that seriously affected the standard of the game locally.
Those that made progress-
Entities such as the Guyana Football Association, Guyana Rugby Football Union, Guyana Hockey Board, Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club, Guyana Amateur Swimming Association, Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation, Guyana Table Tennis Association, Guyana Chess Federation, Guyana Association of Scrabble Players, Guyana Badminton Association and the Guyana Squash Association progressed owing to the sterling and unselfish efforts of energetic administrators, a feature which should be emulated by those delinquent organisations.
A new year is upon us and we in the media look forward to a more challenging and eventful year in 2010.
