On a day which the Sports Secretariat of the Guyana Police Force held it’s Annual Awards Ceremony, the Police under-19 team produced an embarrassing performance at the Number 2 ground at Eve Leary as they crashed to a 124-run defeat against GCC.
Gavon Charles struck 8 fours on the small ground and got support from Raphael Singh (40) and Celvon Hyman (26) as GCC were all out for 226 off the last ball of their 40th over.
Police then catapulted to defeat as they fell for 102 as their last 6 batsmen all made ducks as left-arm spinner Raj Nanan mesmerized the batsmen to finish with 8-19 from his 8 overs.
National under-19 left-arm pacer Andre Stoll, a stand in Guyana’s 2010 First Class squad, pushed GCC on the ropes with 2 quick wickets including that of Skipper and Demerara under-19 player Delon Fernandes before he was forced to leave the field after taking 2-23 from 3 overs when he broke his left thump as he dived on the ground in ‘football-like or Tino Best fashion to celebrate a catch.
National under-17 and Demerara under-19 off-spinner Ricardo Devers made an inauspicious return to cricket after 3 months away from the game due to studies and produced a barrage of full tosses in an untidy 6-over spell to eventually finish with 2-63. Essequibo youth player Dwayne Singh had 3-39 for Police who folded like a pack of cards once the openers; Singh (40) and Parnell (12) were separated.
Skipper Shameer Fazal (5) and Samad Mohamed (14) were the only other batsmen to get off the mark as 31 extras helped Police, batting with a man short due to Stoll’s injury, past the 100-run mark.
At MSC, the home team lost to Everest after making 117 in 30.5 overs with Carlos Larose (26), Nichosie Barker (22) and National under-15 Skipper Shaquille Williams (16) the only batsmen passing 15. Former West Indies under-15 leg-spinner Amir Khan took 4-33 and Asad Mohamed 3-15 for Everest who made 118-3 in 26.4 overs in reply. Mohan Ramdeen top scored with 35 and Christopher Surat made 27 for the Camp Road team.
At DCC, the hosts beat GYO after making 156 and dismissing the visitors for 143. Andrew Gibson followed up his under-15 century on Thursday with 43 and got support from Omesh Danaram (26) as Abdool Rahim and Provindralall Persaud picked up 2 wickets each.
Provindra Deosarran then hit 66 and Persaud 33 in losing efforts for GYO as Dino Choo-we-Nam took 2-8 and Rajiv Singh 2-23.
Is this oil a blessing or a curse?
