After two days of extensive searches for the remains of Michael Leslie, who fell off the Kaieteur Falls, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has now terminated the search operation.
The GDF had located the man’s body but during the stages of recovery, one of the legs of one of the soldiers got caught up in the ropes, and in order to save his life, the rope had to be cut. In the process, Leslie’s body was released.
A press statement from the GDF stated that the search came to an end on Wednesday December 9, 2009 at 15:00 hrs.
According to the GDF, this decision was arrived at with the consensus of the dead man’s brother, Courtney Perry, who was involved in the recovery operation.
On November 27, 2009, the body of Leslie, a 46-year-old porkknocker of 328 West Ruimveldt was spotted at the bottom of the falls.
Relatives had confirmed that he had been missing from his camp in the area since that date.
Friends of the dead man had said that he was last seen alive paddling a canoe along the Potaro River with his dog en route to the Camp which was the base of his pork-knocking operations.
It is believed that Leslie might have encountered difficulties with his canoe about three quarters of a mile from the waterfalls.
“He couldn’t swim,” a friend had told this Newspaper, adding that it is believed that he drowned and his body was subsequently swept over the edge of the Falls by the force of the current.
The porkknocker’s dog however survived, and it was the presence of the dog, which remained steadfast at a particular spot on the river bank that alerted searchers to where Leslie might have gone over the falls.
The dog was spotted at the edge of the falls but despite being persuaded to return to Camp, the animal refused to budge.
The searchers took a clue from the dog’s strange behaviour and on peering over the edge they spotted the body lying on the rocks at the bottom of the 741-foot drop.
