UK based Shawn Beveney leads Loan players list
By Franklin Wilson
BK International Western Tigers FC, one of the leading clubs in the City is aiming to go all the way to championship glory at the 20th Kashif and Shanghai Football tournament.
The club based in the West area has always been one of the best crowd pullers and has exhibited great potential over the years but somehow they have never been able to claim the K&S championship. They have reached the finals once before (2002/2003) but were defeated by Fruta Conquerors.
In order to achieve this big dream, the President and executive of the club is pulling out all the stops to bring home the bacon. Coach Cornel Millington expressed confidence in his charges finally being able to win the coveted title.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport during their Wednesday night training session at the West ground under lights provided by club sponsor BK International Inc. Millington said he is very pleased with the level of commitment being shown by the players at the sessions which are held both morning and in the evenings.
“The training is a bit more intense at the moment and we intend to wind down next week with some set plays and crossing and such like.”
Millington said they were constrained by the smallness of the training ground which is not in the best shape but they were making the best uses of what they have. He mentioned that they were able to have the uses of the Fruta Conquerors ground from time to time to work on their system, defensive play and practice games. “So I expect us to be in top shape in time for our first game on December 23rd.”
Western Tigers will face the winner of the Victoria Kings / New Amsterdam United match-up on Wednesday December 23 at the GFC ground from 20:30hrs.
Millington describes the presence of United Kingdom based striker and senior Golden Jaguar Shawn Beveney as an inspiration to the team. “He {Beveney} is definitely a big plus for us and along with Devon Millington among the likes of Captain Delon Fraser, Sherman David, Renault Fraser, Rolex Scott, Dwayne Ali and others, I believe that we have the artillery to do the job. We are solid and ready to go.”
Beveney in an invited comment stated his delight at being back with his old club and is of the view that this is the season for them to shine.
“I think we are going to win the K&S this time around, the coach Mr. Millington is doing a great job with the team and everyone is working hard at the training sessions.”
The rock solid Beveney also had some words for the Western Tigers fans. “On behalf the team I would like to encourage the fans to come out in their numbers to support us because I think it would be a great tournament for us all.”
Beveney, who plays with Modern Town F.C in the Rymond Division-One, believes he is much more experienced and matured which will be an asset for Western.
