– onus on her to perform at CXC Exams
By Edison Jefford
Alika Morgan has reportedly landed a major United States (US) scholarship deal and will face off-track challenges next year to ensure that she meets the requirement that includes top grades at the Caribbean Examination Council.
Kaieteur Sport understands, from sources close to the athlete, that Morgan was offered an athletic scholarship from a University based in Missouri, United States of America. There is apparently definite and serious interest in the athlete.
However, certain academic prerequisites have to be met. For instance, Morgan must pass the CXC Examination with impressive grades. The top Guyanese female distance athlete is scheduled to write the examination next year.
Her manager, Leslie Black has confirmed that the University is interested. He said that he will meet with this newspaper later to divulge full details. Black said that he possesses all the documentation of interest from the institution.
The 19-year-old Morgan will join the likes of Marian Burnett, Jennifer Chichester and the more recent, Diane Munroe, to have departed to the US on athletic scholarships if there is a success story at the end of the ongoing process.
The distance athlete has literally ran alone in Guyana after obliterating all her rivals since bursting onto the scene at the schools’ level. Morgan lacks competition here and will be a force to reckon with on the US collegiate circuit.
After running without competition here, the athlete took her campaign to the Caribbean in a move that has given her tremendous successes, which include major podium finishes at the region’s most prestigious distance races.
Morgan is a multiple second place finisher at the IAAF South American 10km Road Race Classic and winner of the CARICOM 10k race. She also got on the podium twice in ‘Run Barbados’ and defended her Antigua PM 10k title. A scholarship deal would certainly be the zenith of the young athlete’s career next year in a further bid to propel her to the World Athletics Championships and the Olympic Games in London 2012. Developments will follow soon.
