…but bogus wife collects ahead of time
A 62-year-old pensioner, Abdool Azad Satar, of 81 Lima Housing Scheme Essequibo, who became eligible to collects National Insurance Scheme (NIS) benefit two years ago, was told by a clerk at NIS Anna Regina branch that he died 12 years ago and that a woman named Sumitra who claimed to be his wife collected his pension.
According to Satar, after his 60th birthday he visited the NIS branch in Anna Regina and was shocked to learn that when he applied to receive his NIS benefits, a Clerk told him that he had died 12 years ago.
He said that he was told that a woman named Sumitra received his benefits that totaled in excess of $1M.
She reportedly told the authorities that Satar lived in Pomeroon and had died and that his body was taken to Georgetown and that a funeral was held. The woman entered a claim for transportation fees and funeral arrangements, which she was given.
“My wife name is Annupa Satar and we never lived in Pomeroon and my wife never put in for any claims.” Satar said.
He explained that upon learning this he enquired about the arrears since he was paying NIS from the age of nineteen. He was further told that he only made 300 contributions that NIS has accounted for.
“I visited the NIS Anna Regina branch where most of my contributions were made and they told me to go to Georgetown to report my problem. I was there, I am disgusted with running around up to now, I am 62 and up to now I have not received a cent; only stress.
“How can they pay out money to someone who did not produce a death certificate or evidence to show that I died?” Satar said.
When this newspaper contacted the NIS Essequibo branch it was said that all complaints of such nature would have to be forwarded to Georgetown with the information to be process.
When the Georgetown office was contacted it was said that the person would have to go to records department and that an investigation would be carried out upon the birth certificate being produced to show that the person was alive.
