The four-year-old child who was struck on Mandela Avenue, on Sunday night was removed from the Intensive Care Unit, of the Georgetown Hospital, yesterday.
According to relatives of Latifa Rodney, the child was removed from the ICU after she showed signs of improvement.
The relative said that the child started to breathe on her own and has awakened. The relative further stated that Rodney is also eating “light foods”.
At present, the only problem the child has is that she is not speaking. “She is just looking at us and she is not speaking” the relative explained. Although the child has moved from the ICU she is not out of danger; her condition is still critical.
Kaieteur News also understands that the driver of the pickup truck has visited the child in the hospital and has promised to return. The police also visited the child to get an update on her condition.
This newspaper also understands that charges are likely for the driver of the pickup.
Meanwhile, Latifa’s brother, Osondo Rodney, is also a patient in the Paediatric Ward. His condition is stable.
Latoya Rodney, her four-year-old daughter, Latifa Rodney and one-year-old son Osondo Rodney, were struck down around 20:15 hrs while standing on Mandela Avenue near the entrance to Go-Slow Avenue, Tucville on Sunday night.
Both children sustained head injuries, while the mother received lacerations to the head and foot.
She was never admitted to the hospital. Ms. Rodney recalled that she and the children were standing on Mandela Avenue near a bus stop when she saw a pickup attempting to overtake a car that was heading towards them.
The woman said that she shifted further toward the parapet but the driver of the pickup then lost control.
