Defending champions Hikers and GCC suffered narrow defeats on the second day of competition in this year’s Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Hockey Festival which continued yesterday, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
In the Men’s division, Hikers were beaten 5-4 by GCC, while in the Ladies segment GCC lost 2-3 to the visiting Malvern of Trinidad and Tobago.
The feature contest saw GCC take the lead through Shad Fernandes, who netted in the 10th minute, but Quinn Clarke got the equaliser for Hikers five minutes later.
The two old rivals, who also collided in the final of the GT&T National Indoors Tournament in October, entertained the fans with some sublime hockey, a usual feature whenever they clash.
Dwayne Scott gave GCC the lead once again, but Robert Fernandes tied the contest one minute after, before Devin Munroe secured the lead for the first time for Hikers in the 24th minute of play.
That advantage was stretched even further when the nippy Robert France scored from close range which gave them a 4-2 lead with fourteen minutes remaining.
However, Orland Semple renowned for his exquisite dribbling ability suddenly unleashed his full repertoire of skills and scored thrice in the 32, 35 and 37 minutes to secure the win for GCC.
In the Ladies encounter, the hosts took the lead in the 5th minute through Sonia Jardine, but Malvern responded three minutes later when Oire Trotman scored. GCC’s Trisha Woodroffe restored their advantage in the 28th minute of play, before Malvern levelled the scores through Bridget Poon-Lewis and finally got the winner in the 37th minute when Landri Fourie buried a shot past Alysa Xavier in goal.
In the day’s other results: Malvern edged Old Fort 6-5 in an exciting affair.
On target for the winners were T&T national Wayne Legerton, who scored in the 14, 21, 28 minutes and he was supported by efforts from Colin Byron (18), Darryl Hume (35) and Joshua DeFour (38).
For Old Fort, Aderemi Simon (2, 33, 34) netted three goals, while Canada-based Jonathan Roberts (12) and Brandon Cowlesar (15), also added their names to the score-sheet.
Malvern then defeated Hikers 2-0 in a Ladies contest.
Penny Stephens (23) and L. Fourie (37) were the players on target.
GCC and Fatima drew 3-3.
For GCC, Rawl Davson (14, 38) netted a brace and Phillip Fernandes, the other. Colin Young (10, 24) and Shawn Tang (22) entered the score-sheet for Fatima.
Old Fort then hammered Hikers 9-4 in a veteran contest.

GCC squeezed past Barbados’ YMCA 4-3.
Devin Hooper (26, 32), Leonard George (14) and O. Semple (15) scored for GCC, while Rohan Thomas (9, 15) and Shawn Harewood (13) netted for the losers.
In two matches from Thursday evening: Old Fort narrowly beat GCC 6-5 Men’s Open match-up.
Jason DeSantos (6, 15, and 26) led the way with a treble, J. Roberts (18, 19) tucked in a double and Nicholas Wren (31) added the other. Kevin Spencer (22, 29), D. Scott (30, 38) and O. Semple (12) combined for GCC’s tally.
Hikers then crushed YMCA 10-3 with Robert France (6, 16, 36, 38) and Shane Samuels (11, 17, 28, 33) pouring in four goals apiece, while Jerazeno Bell added the other.
