…for works on Bartica Police Station
A contractor is up in arms against the government, particularly the Ministry of Home Affairs, after he constructed the Bartica Police Station some five years ago and has still not been paid.
The contractor, Prem Singh, of Lot 5 Huist D’ieren, Essequibo Coast, told Kaieteur News yesterday that he was awarded the Bartica Police Station contract five years ago and paid $36 million as the contractual sum.
However, the man noted that the Home Affairs Ministry still owes him $2.9 million for variation works done at the police station.
The variation works, he said, included the construction of the stairway, septic tanks, pavements and filling the compound.
Singh noted that for the past five years, the Home Affairs Ministry has been promising to pay him, as he has been running back and forth to the Permanent Secretary (P.S) at the Ministry.
According to the man, the P.S is always at a meeting. “I don’t know what else to do. It has been five years now since I waiting on my money and I still can’t get paid.”
He told Kaieteur News that he has written a letter to the Home Affairs Minister urging him to look into the situation, but to date he has received no response.
When contacted yesterday for a comment on the situation, Permanent Secretary Angela Johnson told this newspaper that she was not aware of any contractor by the name of Prem Singh, but she promised to have her officers check on the situation come Monday.
