A prisoner who is confined at the President’s Pleasure was yesterday rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a semi-conscious state after he slashed his throat and wrist in an attempt to take his own life.
This newspaper has been told that the inmate, Alvin Shivnarine called ‘President’ used a sharp object to inflict the injuries upon himself and was found bleeding by prison wardens. The incident occurred sometime after 16:00 hours. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was treated and admitted.
This newspaper was told that Shivnarine may have used a makeshift weapon, for which it is not difficult to locate material to make within the prison, since currently there is ongoing construction within the compound.
Sources say that Shivnarine, 22, was to be transferred to the Mazaruni Prison sometime soon but reportedly told fellow inmates that he did not want to go.
Reports are that several attempts were made in the past to have Shivnarine sent to Mazaruni but there was always something preventing the transfer.
Shivnarine is currently serving a life sentence for murder but is at the mercy of the President with respect to any possibility of being released.
Up to press time yesterday Shivnarine was listed as critical but stable. Sources say that the prisoner inflicted two wounds to his throat.
In January 2007, Shivnarine along with eight other inmates escaped from the Mazaruni Prisons.
All were recaptured.
