A police constable was yesterday remanded after making his court appearance to answer a charge for indecently assaulting a female who was detained at the police station where he was posted.
The thirty-two-year-old Constable, Gavin Holder, who lives at Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson for allegedly indecently assaulting the woman between October 17 and October 23, 2009 at Springlands Police Station Corentyne, Berbice. Holder was not required to plead to the indictable charge. He was represented by attorney at law Patrice Henry.
Police prosecutor Stephen Telford objected to bail and requested that the magistrate transfer the matter to the Springlands Magistrate’s court.
Telford then said that the victim was arrested for wandering and placed into custody at the said police station. He added that during the dates mentioned in the charge the accused indecently assaulted the victim.
Telford said that the matter was reported and the accused was subsequently arrested.
He opined that persons who swore to serve and protect should not be allowed to commit such acts. He said an arrested warrant had to be issued for the accused since he tried to escape when he was told he had to come to court.
Holder interjected and said that the prosecutor has fabricated all that was said. He added that he was told yesterday morning that he had to go to court.
The magistrate then granted Telford his request to have the matter transferred to Springlands Magistrate’s court. The accused is expected to appear there on December 21.
