Doodnauth Bedessie, 23, the taxi driver who survived last week’s fatal accident in East Canje, has been granted $400,000 bail on a charge for causing death by dangerous driving.
Bedessie appeared on Monday at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo.
It is alleged that on November 23, last, Besessie drove motor car HB 3753 in a dangerous manner causing the death of Satish Praimanand.
The prosecution case as presented by Prosecutor, Cpl Roberto Figueira, was that Bedessie was driving the car around 22:30 hrs on the Gangaram Public Road when he lost control of the vehicle. As a result the car plunged into the trench, Praimanand who was in the car lost his life as a result of the accident.
The driver (Bedessie) managed to free himself from the wreck and went for assistance but by the time assistance arrived Praimanand was unconscious and was subsequently pronounced dead on arrival at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
A breathalyzer test later revealed that Bedessie was found to have higher than the prescribed level of alcohol in his system.
