Years after being erected in front of Demico House to prevent unnecessary parking, several concrete strips were the target of the Ministry of Works’ demolition crew.
Minutes after the unit descended upon the location, several persons including taxi drivers and vendors expressed their disgust and disappointment at the move. There were no major confrontations.
Three of the men from the demolition crew took turns in using a sledge hammer to chip away at one section. Soon after they abandoned the efforts as media operatives began filming, one of the crew members said “this thing need a jack hammer” and they all boarded a Ministry of Works truck and left the scene.
One of the men confirmed that the action was being carried out with instructions from the Ministry of Works.
When this publication contacted Demico House, senior management personnel reported that company executives met with officials of the Ministry of Works several weeks ago and had agreed to the demolition.
“We had agreed for it to be demolished as part of government’s project to regularise the area so we have no problem with them demolishing the strips,” reported a senior management official.
The official also said that management knows that the strips as well as the sign for the business are on the reserve and as such the strips were being removed. There is uncertainty as to what the fate of the sign will be.
“It’s the ministry’s prerogative to demolish as is necessary and we will not object to any move… we can only abide and comply.”
While some see the demolition as unnecessary, others welcomed the initiative.
“At least the thieves would not be sitting there to pounce pun people and rob them I glad,” said one individual.
Taxi drivers who park outside the location to ply their trade were split on the move. Some said the removal is part of a plot to eventually have taxis removed from in front of the popular location all together, while others opined that it would make allowance for more parking space.
A Demico House source said that part of the plan is that the location will be cleared of all taxis. (Mondale Smith)
