A Guyanese fisherman perished when he was crushed between two boats during a pirate attack early Sunday morning.
At about 08:30 hours yesterday, the Guyanese crew members of two fishing boats operating in the No.1 Caroni, Suriname, area were attacked by two men armed with a shotgun and a cutlass.
It was during the attack that Satrohan Jagdeep Persaud, 53, of Little India Squatting Area, Corriverton, fell overboard and was squeezed between two boats resulting in his death.
According to reports, fishing boat ‘Anna’ captained by Chandradat Harrynauth, 47, of No.73 Village, Corriverton, along with a crew of four men were fishing when a boat with the two armed men came alongside.
They held the fishermen at gunpoint and took over the boat which had a 48hp outboard motor engine and 2,400 pounds of seine.
The armed men sailed the boat ‘Anna’ with their boat tied alongside and later approached another fishing boat ‘Nazia’ which was captained by Ricky Barry, 35, of Crabwood Creek, Corriverton, with a crew of four including Persaud.
According to the police, the armed men used the boat ‘Anna’ to ram the fishing boat ‘Nazia’ which caused Persaud to fall overboard between the two boats and receive injuries to his head and other parts of the body.
The two armed men then took away a quantity of fish glue and the engine lead from the ‘Nazia’ and placed the five crew members from ‘Anna’ into that boat.
They then took the engine off the boat they had arrived in, sunk it, and escaped with the boat ‘Anna’.
The fishermen pulled the body of Satrohan Persaud aboard and subsequently managed to reach the No.66 Fishing Complex, Corentyne.
The body is at the Skeldon Hospital Mortuary.
Investigations are continuing.
