10 senior citizens honoured for distinguished service
“You are all what we call silent heroes – people who work behind the scenes without any fanfare but whose contribution to our nation is unrivaled.
Your commitment, honestly, passion for your country and work ethic are what makes you heroes and our country is much richer today because of your outstanding contributions over the years.”
Those were the words of Secretary/CEO of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, Hilbert Foster whilst delivering the feature address at the 5th Annual Milton Armogan Memorial Tribute to heroes Activity, organised by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club Farfan & Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17 and Pepsi Under-19 cricket teams at the Area “H” Ground on Sunday last.
A total of 10 outstanding senior citizens with the combined 420 years of service to Guyana were honoured by the three cricket teams as part of their personal development programmes.
Foster, during his presentation stated the main aim of the Tribute to Heroes Programme is to honour outstanding residents of the township and surrounding villages who have made positive contributions to the development of Rose Hall, Berbice and by extension, Guyana.
The awardees were reminded that their contributions along with thousands of other silent heroes have resulted in Guyana’s development and they should be proud of their years of unselfish service.
Foster also challenged them to share their experiences with youths while being positive role models to them as they fight against so many social ills including drugs, crime and pre-marital sex.
Captain of the Bakewell Under-17 team Dominic Rickey speaking on behalf of the three teams expressed gratitude to Mr. Lynden Armogan, son of the late Milton Armogan for sponsoring the event and stated that he and his fellow young cricketers were privileged to host and honour the ten awardees as they all viewed them as role models and heroes.
Rickey pledged that the youths will work hard to follow in the footsteps of the awardees and be positive contributors to the development of Guyana.
Representing Mr. Lynden Armogan was Mr. Alain Ramnauth who thanked the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club for organising the event as it was very important for a community to honour and recognise the contribution of those who are now retired after working beyond the call of duty.
Ramnauth praised the club for its work among the youths, elderly and less fortunate while pledging that Mr. Armogan who is a New York based businessman would continue to support the club which is without doubt the best in Guyana.
Those honoured by the club are Clendon Lashley (Retired Police Officer), Agnes Crawford (Retired Cook – Guysuco), Volda Cort (Retired Prison Officer), Kenneth Khedwaroo (Retired Educator), Jean Lewis (Retired Labourer – Guysuco), Wycliffe Brijaddar (Contractor), Leonard Cyril (Jeweler), Ramdat Mahadeo (Carpenter), Irene Trim (Retired Rose Hall Market Cleaner) and Oswald Mann (Retired Culture Organiser).
They all received a Milton Armogan Memorial Certificate of Achievement and special gifts from the club.
Speaking on behalf of the Awardees Mr. Clendon Lashley stated that they all felt humbled to be honoured as heroes and pledged that they would continue to contribute to the development of Guyana.
Ms Agnes Crawford stated that never in her life has she felt prouder and was elated to be recognised by Guyana’s leading Youth and Sports Club.
The RHTY&SC and its three junior cricket teams have expressed gratitude to Mr. Lynden Armogan of New York and his family for sponsoring the programme in memory of the late Milton Armogan who was a Member of Parliament, Community activist and Justice of the Peace.
