Arson is suspected to be the cause of a fire that destroyed the interior of a bond at Sophia early yesterday morning.
The fire, which was discovered at around 02:15 hours also damaged an adjoining shop and a nearby house at lot 12 Dennis Street.
The bond belongs to Felix Stanton who believes that the blaze was the work of a woman with whom he had recently shared a relationship.
He told media operatives that he and the woman had an altercation earlier this week during which she threatened him with harm.
“The young lady run me a set of threats in the presence of the police,” he said.
According to Stanton, the woman subsequently went into his apartment which is situated in the bottom flat of his parents’ house and removed several articles including documents and jewellery.
That matter was reported to the police at the Turkeyen Station and everything was apparently settled, at least so Stanton thought.
Stanton said he was asleep when he was aroused by his niece at around 02:15 hours, alerting him to the fire.
“I jump up and I look out, the whole place red. I run upstairs and disconnected the current and then ran outside, get a bucket and started to out the fire myself. Then the neighbour come out and some others and they start to throw water,” Stanton told this newspaper.
Eventually the blaze was put out.
Stanton then made his way to the nearby Turkeyen Police Station where he reported the matter.
But he is not too impressed with the response of the police.
“They come and they look around, they went back and they tell me come in the morning,” Stanton said.
He did make another report at daybreak yesterday and gave a statement.
Stanton said that at least the police should be questioning the woman based on the threats he reported to them.
“They ain’t even went to the girl’s home to see what’s up. I certain if it was me I would’a been in the lock-up as a suspect. I guaranteeing that,” Stanton said.
This newspaper subsequently contacted the police at Turkeyen yesterday afternoon and they immediately recommenced their investigations.
Up to late last night it was not ascertain if the woman was questioned.
