The management of Courtney Benn Contracting Service Limited (CBCSL) has issued a response in relation to an item carried in last Sunday’s Kaieteur News in connection with an injured worker.
Gavin Liverpool was severely injured while working for the company on the Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge. He sustained major damage to his back. Liverpool’s relatives complained that CBCSL has not been forthcoming with compensation.
CEO of the company, Mr. Courtney Benn spoke to Kaieteur News about the incident. Mr. Benn indicated that he would have preferred if the company could have been contacted for its side.
Providing documents to support the company’s position, Mr. Benn asserted that his company has an excellent record of providing for the welfare of its workers and this has been written about in the press over the decades his operations have been in business
In the case of Liverpool, Mr. Benn said the relatives have not been forthright with their facts. He stated that the company has been paying the relatives for their resources so far and has produced receipts to the tune of $52,000.
The company refused to meet the requests for more funds by the relatives because such a situation has to be regularized and proper procedures are not being followed by Mr. Liverpool’s relatives, Benn emphasised.
The CEO also stated that there appears to be some confusion as to who really speaks for Mr. Liverpool. Mr. Benn asserts that to date the company has not received any medical documents so it can process Mr. Liverpool’s NIS claims which it is willing to do as soon as it is in receipt of such.
Secondly, Mr. Benn indicated that the company has already proceeded with insurance claims, which all of its employees are entitled to from the company’s insurance firm. He added that to date, no documents from Mr. Liverpool’s relatives have been submitted and this is holding up insurance payouts.
Thirdly, displaying a copy of Mr. Liverpool’s personal file, Mr. Benn says that there is no proof of Mr. Liverpool having three children. If this is so, he said, it was not stated by Mr. Liverpool who gave his next of kin as his aunt, but another aunt not listed in his file has collected money on his behalf from the company. Mr. Benn has assured the family that the company stands willing to do everything for Mr. Liverpool once all appropriate documents are in order and the relevant procedures are observed by the family.
