…82 positive for the virus
During the National Week of Testing by the Ministry of Health, a total of 26,660 persons were tested across the ten administrative regions of Guyana, exceeding the initial target of 20,000.
This is only the preliminary figures, as more statistics are expected to be retrieved from Regions Seven, Eight and Nine.
But out of the total number of persons tested, 82 persons were tested positive for HIV.
At a press conference yesterday, Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, noted that out of the number tester 52 per cent were men.
During the National Week of Testing, 400 testing sites were established.
This, Minister Ramsammy said, demonstrates that HIV testing sites need to be convenient for persons so that they can access it easily.
According to Minister Ramsammy, when compared to previous years, the ten administrative regions responded positively to the activity.
Minister Ramsammy commended the hard work of the health workers in region Six, as he noted that they had a self imposed target to test 10,000 persons, while their initial target was only 4,000.
Additionally, the Health Minister also lauded the participation of the Ministry of Home Affairs, where testing sites were established in all the police stations.
The outcome of this initiative proved to be successful, 3,370 persons were tested at the sites established by that Ministry.
The Business Coalition also received kudos from Minister Ramsammy for being more organized than last year. A total of 960 persons were tested from the initiative of the Business Coalition.
