The three suspects who were involved in a high speed chase on Friday were yesterday placed before the courts. The men, Marvin Williams, Dexter Conway and Rawlin Kennedy, all pleaded not guilty to the charges of simple larceny and damage to property.
The men made their court appearance before Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It was alleged that the men, on November 20, stole items valuing $150,000, property of Darshanie Danraj. It was further alleged that the trio damaged one minibus door valuing $25,000. The men were all unrepresented in court yesterday.
According to the prosecutor, on the day in question, about 11:30hrs, the virtual complainant parked and secured her vehicle at Muneshwer’s on Water Street. She later returned to the vehicle and saw that the bus door was opened and the items were missing. The police subsequently received certain information and caught the defendants with the items in their possession. They were arrested and they admitted to the offence.
The prosecutor further stated that bail should not be granted since the defendants are being investigated for the recent Gizmos and Gadgets robbery. It was further noted that an identification parade is expected to be conducted soon.
One of the defendants, Marvin Williams, when given a chance to talk, said that he was a well known businessman and he knows nothing about the Gizmos and Gadget’s robbery.
“Meh worship I does do business all around this town and then I gon look to commit a robbery when everybody done know me,” Williams explained.
The prosecutor interjected and stated that when the defendants were seen by the police they refused to stop and it resulted in a high speed chase by the police. The prosecutor further stated that the items were found in the car’s trunk. It was also noted that all the defendants have pending matters before the court.
Rawlin Kennedy, another defendant, said that he is a taxi driver and that he never refused to stop his vehicle. He also said that the police began shooting and that is when they stopped. Marvin Williams opined that if the residents of Tiger Bag didn’t speak out the police would have killed them.
Bail was refused by the magistrate and they are expected to make another court appearance on Monday.
The three were nabbed in the Tiger Bay area around 14:00 hours on Friday after a high-speed chase by the police. Reports are that the men were driving in a car, HB 3971, on Water Street when they spotted a police vehicle.
Upon seeing the police, the car accelerated and sped north. The suspects were later caught in Bentinck Street Tiger Bay.
