Police Commissioner Henry Greene has assured that the police will be more vigilant in its surveillance of lonely stretches of roads.
The assurance comes in the wake of the attack by bandits on Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond on Wednesday.
The Magistrate was on her way home when it is alleged that four gunmen blocked her vehicle in the vicinity of Letter T Estate, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara after trailing it for while.
The men relieved her and her babysitter of a quantity of cash and jewellery as well as her camera, laptop and cellular phone.
The incident occurred on a lonely stretch of road that was devoid of traffic for several minutes.
Speaking with this newspaper yesterday the Police Commissioner indicated that the incident was a bit of a surprise.
“We haven’t had an incident like this for quite some time. We really sympathize with the magistrate and her family. We will have to be more vigilant in these lonely places,” the Commissioner said.
Magistrate Chandan-Edmond is the second Magistrate to suffer from a bandit attack and this has prompted her to examine moves to have security personnel.
The Magistrate who resides in Berbice travels every day to the city to preside in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
She told this newspaper on Wednesday that she would definitely be seeking the protection of the police in the form of an escort
Earlier this year, Magistrate Nigel Hawke and his wife were attacked by a gunman in their Non Pareil East Coast Demerara home.
That attack prompted the police to mount special security details for some Magistrates at their homes.
However, following an emergency meeting yesterday some of them are not quite satisfied with the security arrangements.
The Commissioner said that any additional request for security will have to be channeled through the Chancellor of the Judiciary.
Meanwhile, he said that the police are probing reports which claimed that ranks at the Weldaad Police Station may have acted less than professional.
Magistrate Chandan had stated that ranks there had referred them to the Mahaicony Police Station, several miles away, when they went to make the initial report.
But according to Greene, the ranks at Weldaad did record the report.
He said that there are some questions to be asked of the ranks at Weldaad, given the gravity of the incident.
“We are investigating exactly what happened at the station” the Commissioner said.
