The National Milling Company (Namilco) on Monday expressed concern about bags that are improperly labelled and are said to contain flour. The labelling of the bags, the company indicated via statement, is inconsistent with the standards set out by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS).
According to Namilco, the bags do not have the name of the product in English; do not state the type of the product; do not have the name of the manufacturer; do not have the country of origin nor the manufacturer’s date.
The company noted that the contents of the bag may be repackaged in unlabelled plastic bags and sold as loose flour and unsuspecting consumers may be under the impression that they are buying Namilco flour.
Namilco is urging the public to only buy flour sold in sealed packets carrying the “Thunderbolt” label.
The entity is also appealing to the Guyana Revenue Authority, the Analyst Food and Drug Department and the GNBS to monitor the importation of flour to ensure it complies with all statutory, regulatory and relevant standards to ensure safety of the vital staple for the consumer.
