Marzana Fiedtkou named MVP
The Georgetown Cricket Club’s under-21 indoor ladies hockey team managed to maintain their dominance at the Magnolias Indoor Hockey Tournament after defeating the hosts by a 3-1 margin in the final played last Saturday, at the Woodbrook Youth Facility.
This was after the two teams had clashed earlier in the pool round with the visitors winning 2-1.
Captain Trisha Woodroffe, who marshalled the Flora GCC midfield, opened her team’s account in the final with a blistering penalty corner flick which deflected off an advancing Magnolias defender and flew high into the open net.
Both teams showed great determination as the battle raged on with some opportunities passing just wide of their target, while spectators were treated to some fine recovery defence and counter-attacking plays.
GCC struck for a second time after receiving a penalty stroke which was confidently slotted home by Most Valuable Player (MVP) Marzana Fiedtkou. Tracy Lee pulled one back for Magnolias with a penalty stroke conversion before the half.
The Flora girls extended their lead in the second half through speedy, exciting forward Gabriella Xavier, who raced into the scoring circle on the right, before sliding her shot just inside the left goal post.
Earlier in the tournament, GCC defeated Paragon 2-0 and received a 5-0 walkover victory against Notre Dame. After beating Magnolias in the pool round, they lost their only match to Ventures by a similar margin.
Young left back Marzana Fiedtkou received the MVP award, while Alysa Xavier received the award for Best Goalkeeper which she had also received the previous year.
Coach Philip Fernandes expressed great pride and satisfaction with the performance of his charges, saying that the girls are facing many more challenges when they compete than are apparent. He made particular reference to the surface which is quite different from those in Guyana, especially those which are readily available for hockey training.
Fernandes went on to say that the standard of women’s hockey in Guyana has shown a vast improvement over the past few years and this is despite the fact that club sides were not even competitive in the region six years ago.
He said that presently Guyana have now reached the stage where they can compete against any club team in the Pan Am region.
Last year the Flora GCC senior ladies team, which included several of the victorious juniors, won the Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Hockey Festival against an experienced visiting side from Canada and this year the local ladies seem to have a strong chance of retaining that title.
The squad was made up of Captain Trisha Woodroffe, Anastacey Sardinha, Ashley DeGroot, Briawna Gordon, Dominique DeGroot, Gabriella Xavier, Kelly-Ann Latchman, Thalia Fiedtkou, Marzana Fiedtkou, Odessa Grogan and Alysa Xavier.
