While Test left-hander Sewnarine Chattergoon is still unavailable due to an ankle injury, the Crandon brothers (Esuan and Royston) and ‘Keeper Delbert Hicks are back in the Berbice team for their final round Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) 4-Day cricket match against Demerara which starts tomorrow at Everest.
The Crandon brothers and Hicks missed Berbice’s last game, which they won against a sub-standard Essequibo, but are now fit.
National under-19 Keeper Anthony Bramble (who made an unbeaten 54 in that game) Devon Clements and Krishnadat Ramoo lose their places in the squad.
With the GCB declaring the match between the Rest Team and Demerara a draw after the last day was abandoned in sunny conditions and through no fault of either team, all Berbice need to do to take the title is avoid defeat even if the Rest Team beat the host in Essequibo in their game which also starts tomorrow. Even if Berbice lose outright but get a first innings lead first, they will win the title.
Demerara must win outright and take first innings points to take the title while Essequibo, with losses in both of their games and the Rest Team with a loss (after taking 1st innings points) and a draw with first innings points, can no longer win the title.
With the Rest team pressing for a win against Demerara in their last match, the game was called off at the Police ground because the Guyana Police Force had rented the ground out for a Primary School ‘Day of Sports’ without informing the GCB that the ground would be unavailable for the final day of the match.
A senior Police office, who wished to remain unnamed, told Kaieteur Sports that the decision to allow the school to use the ground instead of continuing the match was because the educational institution had paid to use the venue while the GCB is allowed to use it at no cost.
It was stated that Senior Superintendent Jarvis, who has not yet returned a call to this reporter as was promised by her office, was the person responsible for the match being discontinued.
Commissioner of Police Henry Green could not be reached for a comment despite several calls to his phone over the weekend.
The Berbice team for tomorrow’s match read:- Assad Fudadin (Captain), Homchand Pooran (V/Capt), Artley Bailey, Rajiv Ivan, Ranga Latchana, Royston Crandon, Esuan Crandon, Eugene LaFluer, Delbert Hicks, Veerasammy Permaul, Brendon Bess, Davendra Bishoo, Keon Joseph.
