Defeat BK Int. Western Tigers 5-3 on penalties; Santos edge New Amsterdam 5-4 for 3rd
By Franklin Wilson
It was a fitting climax to 3rd annual National Milling Company of Guyana (NAMILCO) Football Championship on Friday evening at the Tucville Community ground.
Watched by the top Executives of the company including Managing Director Bert Sukhai, Sunburst Camptown and BK International Western Tigers entertained the large and well behaved crowd to over two hours of thrilling end to end football.
The Sunburst side it was who emerged as champions walking away with the $500,000 first place cheque as they emerged victors 5-3 on penalty kicks following a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation and 30 minutes of extra time.
The third place match up involving Santos, who defeated New Amsterdam United (NAU) 5-4, at one time looked to be a total one sided affair but the boys from the East, turned up the pressure on Santos in the final 20 minutes almost pulling off what would have been a spectacular upset.
But that was not to be as Santos held their nerves to take the $100,000 3rd place cheque and trophy. Santos got their goals from Travis Garraway (6), William Europe (7), Lerone Charles (33), Joey Payne (37) and Quacy Price (65). NAU’s captain and highest goal scorer of the tournament Adrian Adams with 7 to his name netted a double for the Ancient County side in the 55th and 76th minute.
Rondel Hazel in the 70th and Elroy Lewis one minute later also scored for NAU.
The championship match however, proved to be one of the better finals witnessed in a long time as Camptown and the Tigers took some time to size up each other but when the adrenalin started to flow, it was non stop action until the final penalty kick.
Tournament MVP Dwayne Ali it was who eased Western into the lead after a goalless first half. Five minutes into the second, Ali breached the Camptown defence and that of goalkeeper Richie Richards to give his side the lead.
Despite losing a crucial member of their defence quartet (Sherman David) to injury in the first half – 33rd minute to be exact – Western were still able to keep Campton’s forward line at bay.
The West based team were doing a fine job at defending their slim advantage but it was always going to be tough to keep out the Sunburst boys for long especially with one player less since Phillip Rowley was sent marching after receiving a second yellow card in the 65th minute.
With the clock ticking away and just 7 minutes remaining to fulltime, ‘Golden Jaguar’ Reshawn Sandiford stepped up to be recognised for Camptown. Sandiford, playing the right midfield position ran unto a well timed pass that caught the Western defence lapsing to calmly pat the ball to the far post and into goal.
Western were showing signs of tiredness as the match matured past the regulation period of 90 minutes. It was now a testing period for the old stalwarts in the game and Troy ‘Bugs’ Prescod orchestrated Camptown taking the lead for the first time in the game.
They were awarded a free kick just off the corner arc in the left side of the Northern goal and Prescod it was who took the kick, curing it high to the far post for Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington who was kept quiet all game, to head home as he made height above the Western defence in the 96th minute.
But even as Camptown were celebrating, Codrington received a second yellow card one minute later and had to leave the field, making the game even with each team now down to 10 players.
Four minutes later, indecision on the part of Camptown’s Captain and central defender Orlando ‘Cracker’ Gilgeous gave Devon Millington the space he needed to hit the ball past Richards for the equalizer for Western. The final 15 minutes of extra time failed to separate the teams. Sandiford missed two clear cut chances to nail the game for Camptown, one saw the keeper not gathering the ball cleanly form another well taken free kick by Prescod, Sandiford putting the rebounded ball wide of the upright with the keeper on the carpet.
From the penalty spot, Camptown kept a clean slate with Gilgeous, Sandiford, Lance Rolston, Prescod and Richie Richards all scoring. Delon Fraser, Colin Nelson and Dwayne Ali were on target for Western with Renault Fraser placing the ball outside the upright. Western, were not required to take their fifth and final kick.
The presentation ceremony took place immediately after the final and a number of persons were honoured by NAMILCO including the referees who were presented with certificates of appreciation while the Executive members of the Fruta Conquerors, the host club, were presented with certificates of Dedication for their hard work.
