The current land dispute between the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) and the Ministry of Public Works has incurred the forceful repossession of the land by the Ministry of Public Works and talk of the mobilisation of members of the GPSU to confront the “executive lawlessness by the government”.
At a press conference at the Office of the President last Friday, President Bharrat Jagdeo, said that the ownership of the land has never been the dispute.
It is his contention that the GPSU has never used the land, and therefore “they have to show that they have occupied the place.”
According to the President, the fence that surrounded the piece of land at Vlissengen Road and Thomas Lands was in a dilapidated state for quite some time before it was recently pulled down.
“Anyone who passed there would see that there was an old fence, which they only recently took down.”
Jagdeo zeroed on comments by the Leader of the Main Opposition Party, Robert Corbin, who reportedly said that the waving of a transport holds no merit.
He noted that he was surprised that the trained lawyer would make such a comment, but made it clear that should the land turn out to belong to the GPSU, they will get it.
He then added that if legal documents prove that the land belongs to the government “we will not tolerate any land grabbing.”
Jagdeo told the press that the Union should prove that it has occupied the land over the years. “Anyone who has passed there would know that it is not so.”
At a previous press conference held with the land dispute as the topic, President of the union, Patrick Yarde said that the government had committed itself to assisting the union in the maintenance and upgrading of the property with the understanding that the union will facilitate its use by schoolchildren and other persons.
He has also pointed out that there was a discussion between the GPSU and Government representatives where the property was discussed within the context and recognition that it was the property of the GPSU.
This meeting, according to Yarde, took place on May 23 last year. Dr. Roger Luncheon, Dr Nandkishore Gopaul and Ministers Dr. Jennifer Westford and Dr. Ashni Singh were present at the meeting.
