Drainage and irrigation works are currently ongoing in Crabwood Creek and are well on schedule.
This is according to Region Six Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha.
Yesterday, a team from the Region, the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, the Water Users Association and others from the Ministry of Agriculture toured the area where works are ongoing.
The team visited two of the structures which are being constructed.
According to Mustapha, these structures will help tremendously in terms of getting more lands under cultivation. He said that although the structures are now being constructed, persons have already begun accessing available land.
He noted that some two years ago the region only had about 500 to 700 acres being cultivated while to date close to 3,500 acres are being used out of a total of 4,000 acres.
Mustapha said that by the end of next year we would be able to take up all the land.
Already all of the structures are between 65 per cent and 75 percent complete. The structures include four main head regulatory canals and two new bridges.
The bridges will make land more accessible while the main head regulators are intake structures from the conservancies and the secondary head regulators will control the intake from the main canals to the secondary canals.
Works on the structures started last April and are expected to be completed by next September. The project is being funded by the government and the Inter-American Development Bank. The contract is being executed by BK International at a cost of US$20 M.
This project was envisioned early 1995 when the Government had conceived the Agriculture Sector Support Service Programme. This project includes the rehabilitation of drainage and irrigation systems with the aim of expanding cultivation in the region since the main limitations were the availability of water and proper management of water.
