President Bharrat Jagdeo has made it clear that the Police cannot find the 15-year-old boy from whom his Information Liaison Officer, Kwame McCoy, is alleged to have solicited sex.
McCoy had his visa revoked by the US embassy in Georgetown last week without explanation.
“I find it very unusual that someone will be condemned, tried and hung; we have spoken about these kangaroo courts and lynching people, even before investigations are completed,” Jagdeo said when asked about the visa revocation and the Police investigations.
Asked to comment specifically on the actions of the US Embassy, the President said he couldn’t comment on the US government’s policy.
He said the Police investigations cannot move forward because the Police cannot find the 15-year-old boy in question. The President called on the media, which had given the issue wide publicity, to help the Police find the person.
“Why is it that we can’t find this person? If all of these people know this person and where he is from, why can’t he surface?” Jagdeo asked at a press conference he held at his Georgetown office.
The President said he took the allegations against McCoy seriously and that is why he asked the Police to investigate.
When his visa was revoked, MCoy lashed out at the Americans, saying the scenario “represents gross unethical behaviour on the part of the US authorities.” He was referring to the fact that the media was in possession of a U.S government document regarding the revocation even before he was informed.
A voice widely believed to be that of McCoy was recorded having a sexual telephone conversation with the teen a few months ago.
He had denied that the voice was his although evidence revealed that one of the telephones used was registered to McCoy’s office at the Office of the President.
There were several protests with calls for his resignation as a Commissioner on the Rights of the Child Commission.
Despite this he still remains in that position and continues to serve as Press Officer to President Bharrat Jagdeo.
The recent visa revocation follows those of Police Commissioner Henry Greene, Former Commissioner Floyd McDonald, former Home Affairs Minister Ronald Gajraj and former Registrar of the Supreme Court, Sita Ramlall.
