A spray painter of Chung’s Spray Paint and Body Shop was remanded to prison on Wednesday, after it was alleged that he stole a car and drove it without being licensed to do so. On that occasion, he pleaded guilty to both charges after he claimed that he borrowed the car from the body shop to visit a friend.
Yesterday, Ricky Dass returned to court and asked the magistrate to change his pleas to not guilty. He was granted his request.
The prosecutor, Krishnadat Ramana, then asked for bail to be granted in a substantial sum. The magistrate, however, refused to grant the accused bail. He is expected to return to court on Monday.
Dass, 18, of 1 Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara, was remanded to prison after appearing before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson to answer two charges. The two charges read to him were simple larceny and driving without a license.
It is alleged that on November 4, at Bagotstown, Dass stole a Corolla AE100 valued at $2.3M property of Carlton Hopkinson.
It is also alleged that on the same day at Houston he drove the said motor car when he was not the holder of a driver’s licence.
Dass, with a frightened look, pleaded guilty to both charges and explained that he borrowed the car from the workshop to visit a friend in Alberttown.
Dass claimed that when he was heading back to the workshop he saw a road block and turned away.
He stated that he was afraid and as a result he was followed by the police and he jumped out the car and ran but was subsequently caught.
That incident occurred shortly after gunmen had targeted some locations in the city.
Police Prosecutor Krishnadat Ramana stated that on November 3, Hopkinson took his car to Chung’s Spray Paint and Body Shop where the accused was employed.
Ramana explained that on the day in question the police placed a road block at Houston and spotted the accused driving the said motor car.
An investigation revealed that the accused was unlicensed to drive. Further investigations revealed that the accused took the car without the consent of the owner.
